Aircraft locations are determined using the Automatic Dependent Surveillance - Broadcast (ADS-B), which operates in the UHF band (L band) at 1090 MHz
The equipment setup consists of a Flight-Pi receiver, DPD Productions ADS-B collinear dipole antenna with advertised 9.0 dBi gain, and accessories. Flight-Pi shares aircraft data with FlightAware. A PC running COAA PlanePlotter software obtains data from Flight-Pi and produces the map presentation for this website.
