CALLISTO Receiver for e-CALLISTO Radio Solar Spectrometer Network

The CALLISTO-NA (North America) Receiver is available built and tested. The –NA version incorporates all engineering change requests (ECR) and remedies all non-conformance reports (NCR) through October 2011. The main differences between the North American and ETH versions are panel layout and the dc power input connector.

The CALLISTO-NA Receiver is controlled by a user's PC running the supplied Windows application software. Spectral data are collected in the Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) file format. On prior arrangement the data can be regularly sent to FHNW in Switzerland for archive and for use in the e-CALLISTO solar spectrometer network.

Support

  • CALLISTO-NA Receivers in all versions include complete construction and software setup manuals on CD or USB storage stick. Note: We no longer support building your own Callisto instrument, so the construction manual is not updated. Only the software setup manuals are updated.
  • We provide reasonable email technical support for CALLISTO Receivers and products purchased from us. When contacting us, please remember we work on this project in our private time and it is unlikely you will receive an instant reply, but you will receive a reply (unlike 90% of the companies you deal with). Be sure to read the manuals BEFORE contacting us.

Production Runs

CALLISTO-NA Receivers are prepared in limited production runs using private time and effort.  We do not procure parts in large quantities, and we setup production runs to satisfy only current demand. Please take that into consideration when you place your order. If you would like to order the CALLISTO-NA Receiver in quantity, please contact us for a delivery schedule before ordering. 

Receiver Configurations Available for Ordering

The CALLISTO-NA Receiver includes

  • Professionally manufactured printed circuit board (PCB), 2-sided, silkscreened with all components installed and tested
  • Extruded aluminum enclosure with custom machined and labeled front/rear end panels
  • Interface connectors and associated wiring components for RF input, focal plane unit, external clock, power input, video output and EIA-232 interface
  • CD or USB storage stick with application software and construction and setup manuals (application software requires Windows 2000 or later)
    Important note: The software supplied is not compatible with Linux operating systems. DO NOT use Windows emulators on LINUX systems; always use native Windows installations to avoid strange system behavior
  • Callisto software has been developed that has most of the features of the Windows version but runs on a native Linux system. For more information, see: e-CALLISTO software

Optional

  • EIA-232 cable (DB-9F to DB-9M, straight-through wiring, shielded)
  • USB-Serial Converter (adapter)
  • 50 ohm terminations and coaxial cable test jumper cable
  • AC adapter power supplies, 115 Vac, 60 Hz input (North America only) or Universal Input for 50 or 60 Hz. Note: A power supply capable of at least 500 mA or 6 W at 12 Vdc is required for powering the CALLISTO-NA receiver when the receiver does not control a focal plane unit. A power supply capable of at least 1000 mA or 12 W at 12 Vdc is required for powering the CALLISTO-NA receiver when it controls a focal plane unit.
  • Long Wavelength Array (LWA) cross-polarized, tied-fork dipole antenna. Additional details on LWA cross-polarized, tied-fork dipole antenna including active balun assembly and ground stake
  • Low noise amplifier with outdoor enclosure, internal static protection and bias-tee. Approximately 13 dB gain and 0.8 dB noise figure (not required when the LWA Antenna is used with the Callisto)
  • Coaxial cables. Note: We obtain all connectorized coaxial cables from a US contractor that builds them to order. We cannot quote coaxial cables unless we know the lengths required.

The CALLISTO-NA Receiver DOES NOT include

  • Antenna system
  • Coaxial cable transmission line and associated RF connectors
  • Antenna discharge unit (lightning protector) required to protect the Callisto RF input
  • Low noise amplifier to improve the system sensitivity (see accessories below)
  • Serial cable or USB-Serial Adapter (see accessories below)
  • Power supply (see accessories below)
